iVantage Research Identifies Top Performing
Critical Access and Rural & Community Hospitals

Portland ME and Minneapolis, MN – May 9, 2016 – Today at the National Rural Health Association’s 39th Annual Rural Health Conference, iVantage Health Analytics, Inc. announced the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) and Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals in the U.S. The release of this year’s top rural healthcare performers expands upon research presented in February as part of the 2016 Rural Relevance Study: Vulnerability to Value.  Of the top 100, the National Rural Health Association (NRHA) Annual Conference will welcome the top 20 Rural & Community hospitals to the stage in Minneapolis to receive special recognition; the top 20 CAHs will be recognized at the NRHA’s Critical Access Hospital Conference, September 20 in Kansas City.

iVantage’s research reveals that these top performing hospitals (both CAHs and Rural & Community) outperform peer facilities across each pillar of the Hospital Strength INDEX®. Areas in which these hospitals particularly distinguish themselves include Quality and Outcomes, Patient and Safety Satisfaction and Costs and Charges. The median rural hospital earns an overall score of 50, while the median Top 100 hospital earns a 95.

“Measuring performance is central to improving the quality of health care and the performance of these top hospitals shows that, while greatly challenged, health leaders in rural can excel in the transition from volume to value,” commented Michael Topchik, senior vice president of iVantage. “In fact, our research shows that these practice leaders share key attributes that dovetail with the CMS-driven shift to value, showing exceptional performance across the key numerator of value including Quality, Outcomes, Safety and Satisfaction while also achieving the denominator of value with reduced costs and charges.”

Within the context of the Rural Relevance research, iVantage follows the federal definition for CAHs, which includes special Medicare reimbursement rules and parameters such as the number of beds (a maximum of 25) and the average length of stay for patients (a maximum of 72 hours). Rural & Community facilities are also federally designated but are reimbursed by the standard Prospective Payment System (PPS) of Diagnostic Resource Group (DRG)-based reimbursements. The number of beds at these hospitals does not exceed 200.
