Hospital Strength Index™
The Hospital Strength Index™ (HSI) is a comprehensive rating system that serves as a detailed market intelligence, strategy, planning, and performance benchmarking tool. HSI uses data to increase transparency and provide insight into all major performance metrics.
The Index compares over 4,400 U.S. general acute-care hospitals (including the more than 1300 rural and critical access hospitals) across a continuum of financial, value-based and market-driven performance indicators.
Ratings are based on publicly available data sources, including Medicare Cost Reports, Medicare claims data, and Hospital Compare quality reporting.
- Hospitals are rated against national peer groups based on a scorecard-approach using a 0-100 point scale for each performance area.
- Data aggregated from over 56 individual metrics into eight manageable categories to derive a single Strength Index rating.
- The first index to combine financial sustainability metrics with market metrics, such as competitive strength, competitive intensity, market size, quality, safety, satisfaction, and growth.
